Gillespies Beach : This is a beautiful deserted and very windswept beach in glacier country. You have to drive for half an hour down a dirt track to get there but it was stunning.

Hamilton Hut over Lagoon Saddle : We woke up in the morning to find half a foot of snow had fallen during the night (and was still falling). Beautiful but rather unexpected! We got on the radio to Arthur's Pass DOC and they felt it would be ok to keep going so we ate breakfast and got on with it. Wonderful scenery though by the time we got to Lagoon Saddle shelter we were cold, wet and knackered. Still, soup on the stove soon brought us back round and we enjoyed the last 2 hours over the saddle with stunning views. A really magical finish to the tramp.

Bealey Spur Track : We walked the Bealey Spur Track late in the afternoon in poor weather, arriving to find the hut was surrounded by a school group. Thankfully they camped so we got the bunks in the atmospheric, smoke filled tin shack. It rained heavily that night so we barely slept with the noise on the tin roof. Fun though. The following day the weather started to brighten and there were some wonderful views of the plains.
